GHS – Get Home Safely is a phrase, thought, movement to effectively encourage teens, tweens and young adults to Get Home Safely. Too many of our youth are dying from senseless acts, eg. drunken driving, texting while driving, suicide, drug overdose & gang violence to name a few.
GHS is an overarching strategy aligned with running the bases in baseball. For example, with drunk driving: (To be morphed for other causes soon.)
- First Base – Make a good plan for your social activities. Be sure all are centered and supported with the core thought of GHS – Get Home Safely. If too many questions or threats exist, get a new plan.
- Second Base – Go enjoy your evening/event. You are young and want to be fun and engaged. Howl at the moon. At the same time. Be aware of your actions and those of your peers and your surroundings. All must be in synch with your mantra – GHS – Get Home Safely.
- Third Base – Look towards tomorrow. One core desire or belief of youthful fun is that the fun/evening will never end. You and your peers want to keep the fun going “forever”. And yet, inevitably tomorrow is on the way. How will you meet it? Dead? In jail? Too sick to function? Or simply a bit overtired, but happy and healthy with a treasure trove of fresh great memories?
- Home Plate – GHS Get Home Safely must be your plan, your mantra, your mission & your goal. No matter the method, or arrival time, just GHS – Get Home Safely. Never get in a vehicle with a driver that is compromised, by alcohol, by drugs, by distraction, by reckless behavior or by unclear intentions. Get a new ride, call parents, call friends, call a neighbor, walk, take a train, bus, cab, Uber, Lyft – Sleep where your at. Sleep someplace safe. Anything at all, BUT NEVER EVER GET IN A VEHICLE OR A LOCATION THAT THREATENS YOUR MANTRA – GHS – Get Home Safely
The movement was born of a visceral response to too many deaths in one small town. The organizers want to move from grief, to solace, to honor the dead by stopping future deaths while also leading healthy vibrant lives.
The colors represent the black and blue bruising of grief, the orange is transitional from initial solace then towards honoring the fallen, (Orange you glad you knew them?) Red represents a commitment to taking action to stop some future death from a similar cause. And green reminds us all, that we grievers though pained and torn, are still alive. Therefore, we must permit ourselves, indeed find the resolve to live vibrant full lives.
